The Muscadet Sèvre et Maine vineyards at the heart of France’s largest single-varietal winegrowing area epitomise the Nantes landscape: wild yet magnificent. After years of hard work, the winegrowers here have recently achieved the ultimate accolade

This year, the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation has designed a trail departing from Vertou, taking in some superb natural views of the vineyards of the Nantais.  The VVR route follows vineyard paths and the banks of the appellation’s 2 iconic rivers, leading you through the area’s famously rich heritage.

Itinerary:
  1. Leaving from the racecourse in Vertou, it’s just a short distance to the tiny village of Portillon. The route starts off by following the Sèvre, then takes a steep path up to the vineyards.  This is where you make our first stop, to taste a 2016 muscadet-sèvre-et-maine sur lie served with a selection of local foods.   Enjoy the magnificent panorama - vineyards as far as the eye can see, ancient mills, market gardens growing the region’s traditional produce, and small villages all around, fading far into the distance...

  2. Continue along this plateau through the vineyards with a superb panoramic view at almost every step. Walk through woodland to the hamlet of Les Pégers; from here, the route quickly leads back to the vineyards and on to your second stop. Taste the muscadet-sèvre-et-maine crus from Château-Thébaud or  La Haye-Fouassière, paired with local foods, and take a moment to admire the view - country churches in the villages of La-Haye-Fouassière and Saint-Fiacre and the appellation’s eponymous rivers, the Sèvre and the Maine.  This area is brimming with history; what better place to find out a little more about the term Muscadet (which dates back to the beginning of the 18th century) ?

  3. Your walk continues along the banks of the Sèvre to our third stop, where we will taste a vintage muscadet-sèvre-et-maine paired with local speciality foods. Relax in the shade of a weeping willow; enjoy the peace and quiet of the surroundings and prepare for the final stage of the walk, back to the Vertou racecourse and the VVR village.

The VVR team will be on hand to welcome you back as you return to this rather
unusual location, from which you can admire the stunning 18th century Château de la Frémoire. Refreshments will be on sale from a variety of food trucks, and all the wines you tasted on today’s walk will also be available to buy. Children can enjoy playing on the giant inflatable brought in for the occasion, and live music will add to the party atmosphere, helping to make this an unforgettable day
You might like to take a chain ferry over to
Château Frémoire on the other side of the Sèvre. The Château hosts various events on summer weekends, including pop up wine bars; light meals are also served.
Picnic space is available.
